A Grandparent’s Promise to Self
A Daily Reminder to Me
I choose to earn trust, not expect it.
I choose presence over control.
I will meet curiosity with patience,
and difference with acceptance.
I will speak carefully, listen generously,
and leave room for others to lead.
I will not trade love for compliance,
or generosity for leverage.
I will not burden a child with my fears,
or ask them to manage my emotions.
I will stay calm when moments feel urgent,
and think in years, not days.
I will respect parents as parents,
and children as whole people.
I will make my presence feel safe,
my love feel free,
and time together feel light.
I understand that affection is not owed.
It is offered.
And if I am chosen — even quietly —
I will know I have shown up well.
